Ask us a question →

What does an air conditioning installation involve?

Most installations are a split system: an indoor unit connected to an outdoor unit by insulated refrigerant pipework, which can both cool and heat. In the UK, the work must be carried out by an F-gas certified engineer. A typical installation includes a site survey, sizing the system for the space, drilling through the wall for the pipework, charging the refrigerant and full electrical commissioning. A single-room system is usually fitted in a day.

Do I need planning permission for air conditioning?

Often not. Since 29 May 2025, air-to-air heat pumps (air conditioning that can also heat) can be installed on many homes in England under permitted development, without applying for planning permission, as long as conditions on size, number of units and noise are met. Listed buildings and properties in conservation areas can face extra restrictions, flats may need the freeholder's consent, and commercial buildings are assessed differently. We'll check what applies to your property during the survey.

What types of air conditioning can you install?

Single-split wall-mounted systems suit individual rooms and small offices. Multi-split systems run several indoor units from one outdoor unit. Cassette and concealed ducted systems suit open-plan commercial spaces, and VRF systems give individual zone control across larger, multi-storey buildings. We supply and install all of these, using leading brands including Daikin, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi Electric, Panasonic and Toshiba.

How much does installation cost?

It depends on how many indoor units you need, the length of the pipe runs, electrical work, access and the brand you choose. A single room at home is priced very differently from a multi-zone commercial project, and older properties, purpose-built flats and buildings in conservation areas can need extra work. We offer free, no-obligation site surveys with an itemised quote.

How long does installation take?

A single-split system for one room can usually be installed in a day, including drilling, refrigerant commissioning and electrical connection. Multi-split systems serving several rooms usually take one to two days, and larger commercial installations are planned and project-managed individually. Access, older buildings and high-rise properties can add time, so we'll confirm timings after the site survey.

Which brands do you recommend?

We install systems from Daikin, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi Electric, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Panasonic and Toshiba, all well-established names in home and commercial air conditioning. We'll recommend the best fit for your property, how you'll use it and your budget.

How do I choose a reliable installer?

Check that the company is F-gas certified, for example through REFCOM, holds manufacturer accreditations and has current public liability insurance, and look for genuine reviews on Google or Trustpilot. A good installer will also give you full commissioning paperwork and a handover pack when the job is done. Polar is REFCOM registered and SafeContractor certified, our engineers are City & Guilds qualified, and we offer free site surveys across London and the South East.
